How do i know which string the guitar sheet music is telling me to play this note on?

I know i've just asked this question but...

I understand the music now after doing some research but what i don't understand still is how do you know which string it's on for example it might say an F# on the music but how do i know which string the F# is played on?

Thanks xHow do i know which string the guitar sheet music is telling me to play this note on?
Ellie,

You've encountered the reason why most guitarists hate standard notation. With piano, there is only one way to play one note. With guitar, there are multiple ways to play a note. This is why TAB is more common with guitar.

To answer your question though, you need to see where in the staff the F# is located. Most of the notes in the treble clef are played on the first 4 frets of the smallest few strings on guitar. For example, if it's on the top line of the treble clef, then play the 2nd fret of the small E string. If it's the low F# of the treble clef, then play the 4th fret of the D string.

It's personal preference, really. What string will it be easier for you to play it on?

It really doesn't matter. :P
