How to read guitar sheet music?

I just bought a guitar song book. One of the songs is ';Wonderwall'; by Oasis. The sheet music has both music notation and guitar tablature. Above the music notation are chords at the beginning of each measure. The tablature are for the music notation. It looks like it's for the melody/lyrics. The music sheet also lists ';Strum Pattern: 3'; and ';Pick Pattern:3';. I'm only a beginner guitar, so I'm used to just playing chords.

1. How do I strum the chords to the song? Is it 4 strums per measure as noted in the sheet music?

2. What's a good method to learn how to play this song using this sheet music? How to read guitar sheet music?
You don't have to strum according to the book. Figure out your the best way you can strum (as long as you keep in time) and stick to it.

If you are new to reading guitar tab try this page. It explains it better than I could.

I usually listen to the song first then I try to figure it out
If you have this particular song recorded or on a CD/Album. Try listening to it and watch the song book with cords and try playing along with it or just watching the cords on the song book as the music plays. To get a feeling as to the rhythm and cord changes. Hope this helps.
if i were you, i wouldnt pay attention to the strumming pattern, listen to the song and find a pattern that fits. As for the notation, listen to the song and its melody. Then use the tabulature and try to play it. If you have a good sense of what the melody is before playing the song, you should get the hang of it pretty quickly.
